The individual World championships held in Umag, Croatia, in late September, contained some terrific British and 45 Club successes – we did not do so well in the singles events in which the players who spend all their time playing on Clay tend to dominate. The exception was Gill Clayton who came through to win the ladies 65+ consolation event – great effort Gill. However, our successes were in the doubles: John Draper and Lennie Lawrence won the 80+, Fran MacLennan playing with Petro Kruger of South Africa beat Jackie Boothman and Ellie Krocke to win the ladies 70+ doubles and Fran MacLennan playing with Hugh Thomson of the USA played Phyl Bentham and Norman Church to win the final the 70+ mixed. In the men’s 65+ doubles Chris Ornstien and Rennie Johnston got through to the 3rd round before losing to the South African no 1 pair, Bob Harrower and I were knocked out in the 2nd round by the Australian number 1 pair, one member of which (Terry McLennan) is the current World Number 4 in doubles. Tom Baron and Gordon Oates lost in the quarter finals of the 80+ doubles.
